Tom Cannock's Ceremony Tips.

I’ve been marrying couples in Australia for a quite a few years now and I’ve picked up a few tips along the way. I thought it was about time I put my fingers to the keyboard and wrote down some of the things I’ve learned. These aren’t necessarily my “Top 5” but just five things that came to mind when sat down and thought about what makes a good ceremony.

1. Keep It Short A lengthy ceremony isn't necessary to express the depth of your feelings. 15 minutes of ceremony from the moment you are both standing there is plenty. This duration keeps the event engaging and fun without losing the attention of your guests. I’ve never had a complaint about a ceremony being too short but I’ve heard plenty of stories from other weddings of them going too long!

2. Include Friends and Family Personalise your ceremony by involving your loved ones. Have a close friend or family member read a poem or share a funny or touching story about the two of you. You get to make someone feel special by being chosen and it makes the ceremony truly yours.

3. Keep It Close Arrange seating so that your guests are close to where you'll be standing. This fosters a cosy, intimate vibe. You want to feel like you are spending time with your closest friends and family; not performing at a stadium show.

4. Keep It Simple Avoid complicating your special day with intricate timings, animal ring bearers, or fireworks. These things tend to be more trouble than they are worth. I recommend focussing on being present and relaxed. You’ll have way more fun that way. That leads to…

5. Relax, Relax, Relax Remember, it's your big day, and it should be fun and easy-going. Opt for vendors and venues known for their laid-back and flexible approach. Concentrate on the aspects that truly matter and let go of minor details. The more relaxed you are, the more you'll enjoy the ceremony and the more your guests will too.
